Garmin Forerunner 920XT Review

Garmin Forerunner 920XT is a sleek, lightweight triathlon watch which easily transitions between sports at the press of a button. It’s 15% lighter and 18% thinner than the earlier Forerunner 910XT.

Forerunner 920XT has a slimmer profile with easy to remove straps and high-resolution color display which is easy to see in low light conditions with a backlight and time out. Unlike conventional watches, the display is square with 2 buttons either side of the side of the screen.

The control buttons easily let you tap and navigate through the menu and data fields available. Athletes may prefer this watch as it is not a touchscreen. Watch bands can be changed for a range of optional colors.

Powerful multisport features, ideal for triathlons

Forerunner 920XT can easily be worn every day outside of triathlon training. It includes daily activity tracking features (step counter, distance, calories burned etc) similar to the Garmin Vivoactive GPS smartwatch.

However, the Forerunner 920XT is more suited to dedicated athletes, rather than casual gym use like the Vivoactive. A red move bar appears onscreen when you’ve been sitting too long along with a vibration alert to help motivate you to move. This feature can be turned off if you prefer not to be distracted. Wear Garmin Forerunner 920XT at night to monitor the quality of your sleep and movement.

Best sports watch features for triathletes

Garmin Forerunner 920XT is the first Garmin triathlon watch with running dynamics. When it’s paired with a Garmin HRM-Run (heart rate monitor chest strap) it will provide feedback on your running form by measuring stride length, cadence, ground contact time (how much time your foot is on the ground during a run), ground contact balance (time spent on left and right foot), vertical oscillation (how much you bounce in your run) and the ratio of this and your stride length with vertical ratio. Forerunner 920XT also estimates VO2 max, recovery time and predicts your race times for several distances when used with heart rate monitor.

Recording in-depth metrics for swimming, cycling and running, tracking daily activity, while keeping users connected, the Forerunner 920XT is ideal for training, racing, and everything in between.

Improve your running form

You can review your data in Garmin Connect after your run (and on-screen during a workout) to help improve your running form. Advanced runners should be aiming for high cadence (above 180spm) and lower vertical oscillation. These features only work with an HRM-Run and not the entry-level chest strap. However, you can buy the Forerunner 920XT as a bundle which includes the HRM-Run.

Indoor pool training

If you are training for a triathlon and hitting the pool regularly the 920XT will certainly help. Swim capabilities include drill logging, rest timer, and distance recording. You can keep track of your pace, stroke type and more.

Use Forerunner 920XT for cycling

The majority of athletes who are serious about training will be using an Edge GPS bike computer for cycling. That said, Forerunner 920XT will still record speed, distance, ascent/descent and grade. Pair with ANT+ compatible sensors to measure heart rate, speed, cadence, and power for extra cycling features. When used with a cycling power meter, Forerunner 920XT also estimates VO2 max.

Extra long battery life for ultra events

If you are training or competing for longer the don’t worry, Forerunner 920XT battery lasts 24 hours with standard GPS recording. You can also use the UltraTrac feature to increase battery life by up to 40 hours.

Upload, review and share your training

Wirelessly upload and sync your activities with the Garmin Connect App. Now available on all mobile platforms, Garmin Connect is a free online community where you can save, plan and share your efforts. Create workouts, training plans and goals to get the most out of your Forerunner 920XT. See a complete picture of your activities, including elevation profiles, mapping and more.

Garmin Forerunner 920XT review summary

This watch is ideal for serious triathletes and also runners, cyclists, and swimmers. If you regularly take part in a range of activities then you’ll enjoy using it to assist and monitor your training.

You can customize with new color bands and new screens, widgets, and apps from the new Connect IQ store. A heart rate bundle option is available for athletes who also require a running dynamics. A further option is to purchase from Amazon the HRM-Tri or HRM-Swim Bundle for advanced training.
