Forerunner 620 is currently Garmin’s flagship running watch. It’s an advanced running watch with a color touchscreen and offers features like recovery advisor, race predictor and VO2 max estimate (we’ll cover these later on). This is a serious running watch aimed at runners that want maximum data from their training and runs, or those runners that simply want the latest and best wearable tech on their wrists (no harm in that at all!).Forerunner 620 is a considerable upgrade to the previous Forerunner 610 which also had a touchscreen but was very clunky to navigate, the 620 is easy to navigate and scroll through the screens (even with sweaty fingers or gloves).

The new HRM-Run monitor adds feedback on running form by showing your cadence, ground contact time and vertical oscillation, or degree of bounce. The 620 also has connected features like automatic uploads to Garmin Connect, live tracking and social media sharing so you can promote your achievements to your friends. With high resolution touch-screen display the Forerunner 620 is a GPS running watch that does more than just measure essential running data like distance, pace and heart rate. The 620 captures a wealth of data that gives runners a detailed insight into their training and where they can improve. We would recommend purchasing the Heart Rate bundle option as pairing with the HRM gives you Running Dynamics. This isn’t the average heart rate monitor that Garmin offers but the HRM-run version which has a built-in accelerometer to measure torso movement and running form. The Forerunner 620 ‘Running Dynamics’ are what separates the 620 and it’s competition. Running Dynamics includes the following extra features:
This feature counts total steps (right and left combined). A typical cadence is between 150-200 steps per minute, with 180 steps being the sweet spot.
Ground Contact:Forerunner 620 measures how much time, during the running motion, your foot is on the ground rather than in flight. Ground contact time is measured in milliseconds. Most running ground contact times are between 160-300 milliseconds. Elite runners typically spend under 190-milliseconds in contact with the ground each step.
This shows the degree of ‘bounce’ in your running motion. Vertical oscillation is measured in centimeters from a fixed point on your body (sensor on the chest mounted HRM-Run monitor) typical oscillation is between 6-13 cm. Elite runners generally oscillate less.
Estimates the maximum volume of oxygen (in MM) you can consume per minute per kilogram of body weight at max performance. VO2 max is an indication of aerobic capability and should increase as your fitness improves. Recovery Advisor: Estimates how much time you need to recover from your run. And at the start of the next run, provides a real time assessment of your recovery so you know how hard you can go.

Bluetooth Connectivity and Free Online Training App
The Forerunner 620 comes with a magnetized USB charging cable that the watch snaps into. Unfortunately the cable is bespoke to the 620 so any other charging cables won’t fit the device. We hope in the future Garmin standardize their USB cables. Once connected to your desktop computer (PC or Mac) you’ll need to download Garmin Express, this is the free application which syncs and updates your Garmin device (not to be confused with Garmin Connect).

There is an easier way to sync the Forerunner 620 and this is done with the Garmin Connect mobile app and a Bluetooth compatible smartphone, of course you’ll still need to connect your 620 to the cable to charge it (battery life is up to 6 weeks in watch mode / 10 hours in training mode). The Forerunner 620 is also WI-FI compatible and allows you to set up friendly hotspots – such as your home or office – so that your regular runs are uploaded instantly when you finish. There is button labelled ‘Connect’ on the bottom right of the 620 and pressing this button will initiate syncing so long as your smartphone is also on the same network. If you use Strava rather than Garmin Connect you can easily sync your data directly to your account.
Live Run Streaming
One of the Forerunner 620 features we love is Live Track. This new feature allows you to stream your run in real-time with family or friends via email or social media. If you run with your smartphone this is ideal and is also a great safety feature for those long training runs. Now your connections can see where you are on a map in real-time and how far away from home you are. Live Track will also give them data such as pace, time, distance and heart rate.
Garmin Forerunner 620 Review Summary
Although the Forerunner 620 touchscreen could be larger, once you’ve been running with it a few times you’ll quickly get used to navigating through the menu system to find the data you need at a glance. Pairing the advanced heart rate monitor (HRM-Run) with the 620 adds a wealth of running data, which is perfect for training and any runner looking to improve their running form. The Forerunner 620 is an expensive GPS training device but if you are looking for advanced data then this is the ideal training partner for you. If you can live without detailed stats such as Running Dynamics and VO2 Max then the Forerunner 220 is a cheaper alternative.
